greetings, students:

in response to limiting the spread of the coronavirus, on march 23, 2020, allen university will begin instruction of all graduate and undergraduate classes in a distance education (online) format.  this is the first day following spring break.  at this time, you will meet academic requirements remotely (online) until further notice.

You will receive an email from each of your instructors with guidance in making this transition as you continue to receive instruction centering on course content and completing assignments.  To assist you with questions that may arise, there will be a separate link titled Online Resources for Students, which will be located on the My Allen landing page.  This link will house information and resources that will aid you in communicating with your professors and completing assignments.  Many of you have already been utilizing online tools via CENGAGE and Jenzabar’s eLearning module.  Thus the transition to an online format for course instruction will not be an entirely new one. Do know that your instructors and I are here to support you as you continue to strive toward academic success.

ATTENDANCE

1. How will attendance be taken for my class?

沙巴体育在线your professors will meet virtually with you and will record attendance just like in a live/in-person course.  you are required to be available during the regular course time [for example, mwf at 10:00am-10:50am]

沙巴体育在线faculty will also communicate with you by email, as well as on the news and announcements page on elearning.  you should log into your courses at the designated time the course is scheduled to meet and check your email regularly for communication from faculty. faculty will also be available to meet and support students during their normally scheduled office hours.  faculty are here to support you, and you should email your professors immediately if you have any questions or concerns.

2. What if I want to come to campus to meet with my instructor?

沙巴体育在线please contact your instructor by email to schedule a meeting before coming to campus.  we also recommend meeting by phone conference or virtually.  your instructor will provide specific instructions for scheduling meetings.

3. How soon can I access my courses?

沙巴体育在线you have access as soon as you log into myallen/elearning.  then, go directly to the course page.

INSTRUCTION DELIVERY

1. Will we still be utilizing MyAllen/eLearning?  

YES. The Online learning platform used for basic content delivery is MyAllen/eLearning.  It can be accessed at    Faculty will also provide you with information about additional online resources for content delivery.

2. Are there specific tech resources that my instructor will use to teach my class?

沙巴体育在线faculty will utilize zoom for live instruction; however, some may also utilize other online or phone conferencing apps to teach their class.  you are required to be available when live instruction through these means are scheduled.  all live instruction will be scheduled at the time the course is scheduled to meet.

3. What if I am unavailable during live instruction?

An instructor may provide recordings of live lectures, playbacks for a conference calls or other materials for instruction.  Contact your instructor directly or check the eLearning course page for access to these materials.  Note: You are responsible for following up by way of contacting your instruction if you are absent.

TECHNOLOGY

1. Do I need to use University Email/username for access?

YES. To access your course, you must log into MyAllen/eLearning. You will need your Login In ID and Password.

2. What if I cannot access eLearning/MyAllen?

3. Do I need a computer?

Yes. We recommend utilizing a computer/laptop for the best view and access; however, you can also utilize your phone.  A smart phone will provide you with access and in many instances allow you to complete work on the go.

4. Does the university provide computers/computer access?

Not at this time.沙巴体育在线  However, many companies, such as HP offer laptops for under $200.

5. Can I use a Smart Phone for my online course?

YES.  You can access your ELearning course from your Smart phone; however, full features may not be available to you.  It is imperative that you utilize a full computer for the greatest ease accessing content and completing assignments.

1. What about textbooks?

INFORMATION ABOUT CORONAVIRUS

 WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS:

according to the center for disease control (cdc), coronavirus 2019 (covid-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person.  the virus that causes covid-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in wuhan, china.

HOW IS CORONAVIRUS SPREAD:

according to the cdc, person-to-person is occurring although it’s unclear exactly how it is transmitted and how easily the virus spreads between people.  however, it can be spread in the following ways:

  1. through the air by coughing and sneezing;
  2. close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands; and
  3. touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

 SYMPTONS:

沙巴体育在线patients with covid-19 have reportedly had mild to severe respiratory illness.  symptoms can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.  symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS:

  • Please contact Health Services located on first floor of Coppin Hall at 803-376-5733 or 803-376-5732 if you are uncertain or have questions about any medical issues.
  • Seek medical care right away. Before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your symptoms.
  • Self-isolate if you become sick.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care.

SOME PREVENTATIVE MEASURES THAT CAN BE TAKEN:

沙巴体育在线we are following the cdc’s current recommended guidelines for preventing the spread of the virus on college and university campuses by encouraging our students, faculty, and staff to take the following precautions:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, particularly after going to the bathroom, before eating, or after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that is at least 60 % alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid contact with respiratory secretions.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Sneeze or cough into your elbow instead of your hand.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces such as your cell phone and keyboard using a regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
  • Avoid shaking hands and hugging.
  • Elbow bump instead of shaking hands.
  • Practice good personal hygiene.
  • If you haven’t received your flu shot, please be sure to do so.
  • On a plane, keep the vents above your seat open to improve ventilation.  Point the open vent to blow air away from you.
  • Be careful while on Spring Break and follow the above preventive measures.
